All plans

This article walks you through creating a form that only captures the respondent's email address. This is a low-friction way to quickly get new contacts into Copper.

You can use this to:

  • Gatekeep downloadable content on your website, such as an ebook

  • Capture event registrations

  • Gather interested parties on a "wait list" for an upcoming event or new offering

In the example below, I will create a form that I'll use to require an email address before an ebook can be downloaded from our website.

Only Admins and Account Owners can create and manage Forms.

When you access the forms builder for the first time, you will see some information about the feature, as well as a primary action to create a new form.

First time user experience

Once you've selected Create a new form, you will see a modal confirming that you are creating a People form. Continue to the form builder.

Contact entity selection modal when Leads are not enabled.

If your company has Leads enabled, you will see a modal that explains the difference between Leads and People, as shown below. If you're unsure which option to choose, see our Copper 101 guide on Leads vs. People.

Contact entity selection modal when Leads are enabled.

You can only change between Leads ↔ People when creating a form. Once your form has been published, you won't be able to change the entity type for contact creation.

Now we'll go through the steps you take to configure the form to be an email capture form that is gatekeeping downloadable content, including:

  1. Removing all fields except the Work Email field

  2. Customizing the form header

  3. Adding the download link to the success message as a CTA button

1️⃣ Remove all fields except the Work Email field. On the Build step, there are two ways to remove a field from the form:

  • On the left-hand side, uncheck the box next to the field

  • On the right-hand side, click the 3-dot menu next to the field and click Remove field, as shown below

Remove the Name field

Do this for the Full Name and Message fields.

2️⃣ Customize the form header. I'm using "Download the playbook".

💡 Pro-tip: Place an "empty space" in the form title using the space bar on your keyboard, as shown in the GIF below. This will effectively "hide" the header from the form if you would like it to truly only display the email field.

Putting a SPACE in the form title

3️⃣ Add the download link to the success message as the CTA button.

  • Toggle on the button

  • Paste your download link or the URL where the content lives

  • Customize the button text with a clear call-to-action

You can also customize the success message, as I've done below.

4️⃣ Configure your form actions on the Workflow tab and style your form on the Style tab. The articles for Creating a Lead form and Creating a People form cover these steps in detail.

5️⃣ Hit Save & Publish

6️⃣ Go to the Share tab and grab the snippet or share link. See our step-by-step installation guide for the how-to on placing a Copper form on your website.

🥳 You're all set!

Here's what my form looks like:

Completed email capture form

New contacts created from an email capture form will have the email address copied into the Name field on the newly created Copper record. Contact enrichment may update the record with the respondent's name, if one is found.

Now that your email capture form is live on your site and collecting responses, you can interact with these responses and respondents in Copper just like you do any other Copper form.
