Working with Companies

AllPlans.png

A company represents a business entity you are either doing business with now, or may be doing business with soon. A company is typically related to a person record, which represents the contact at the company who you're working with.

In this module, we'll tackle the following:

Understand companies

Define your workflow

Create a company from scratch

Relate a company to a person

Explore the 'Companies' landing page

Understand companies

A company is a business entity that is ready to formally evaluate your product or service.

A company could be a business, a school, an association, or any other entity that links people together.

Typically, you'll associate a company record with a person record, the latter of which represents the person at the company who you're communicating with in this process. You can associate several people with a single company or choose to not link any person record to a company.

Other common fields you might store at the company level include, company phone number, address, annual revenue, and number of employees.

Define your workflow

It's optional to create company records. For example, if you do business with individual people regardless of where they work, companies may not be necessary in your workflow. To determine whether you need companies, ask yourself if you need to track your interactions with other businesses, associations, etc. or whether you just need to track interactions with the individual person you're communicating with to close a business deal.

Create a company from scratch

If you decide to create companies, here are the instructions:

  1. Sign into your Copper account and click 'Companies' from the lefthand navigation bar.
  2. Click the blue 'Add New' button.
  3. You're required to give this company a name. Every other default field on the box that appears is optional. company1.png
  4. Click 'Save.'

Once a company has been created, the resulting record looks like this:

On the left, you'll see all the default and custom fields you've chosen to display for companies. This gives you context for what the company does. You might notice that some information you did not add to these fields is pre-populated; things like the LinkedIn profile or the customer's address. You can learn more about how we find this information and populate it for you

In the center, you'll see your interaction stats, which help keep you on track with the frequency of your communication. Below that you have your activity log, where you can see the details of each interaction you've had with the company and any updates that have happened on the company record. You can @mention other users to follow up with this company or take action on a task associated with this company. You can also filter this log to see relevant events.

To the right, you can see the opportunities, peopletasks, files, calendar events and projects associated with this person.

Relate a company to a person

To relate your company to a person:

  1. Sign into your Copper account and click 'Companies' from the lefthand navigation bar.
  2. Click the company name from your list of companies.
  3. On the far right column of the company's profile page, you'll see a plus sign next to 'People.' Click this plus sign, then begin typing the name of the person. The system will either find a match with an existing record or allow you to create a new record from the name if no match is found.

Explore the 'Companies' landing page

The 'Companies' landing page looks like this:

You can customize the  landing page to get more meaningful data from it. Let's explore each of these customization functions.

The dropdown menu in the upper right of the page lets you filter your list of companies for the ones most relevant to you right now. The funnel icon in the upper left lets you see a list of the filters that are currently applied. You can change the filters on either side.

The blue 'Add New' button lets you create a new company record from scratch. If you click the downward arrow to the right of it, you can create a new lead or import existing companies into Copper.

The 'Search' bar in the green top banner lets you search all records in Copper from the 'Companies' list view. The smaller magnifying glass in the upper left corner of the list view searches only companies.
