A primary contact is the main contact for a company or an opportunity. This article walks you through updating the primary contact for each:
Updating the primary contact for a company
Copper will automatically set the first person who is related to the company as the primary contact.
There are two places where you can update the primary contact for a company:
From the Details section
From the People list in the Related section
When you update the primary contact, Copper will automatically:
Display the primary contact in the list view of companies
Move the new primary contact to the top of the People list in the Related section
Set the Primary Contact badge next to the person in the Related section
Update the Primary Contact field in the Details section
Updating the company's primary contact from the Details section
To update the primary contact for a company from the Details section:
From the Copper web app, navigate to Companies
Select the company you would like to update
From the Details section, click the Primary Contact field
In the field, use the search to find the person that you would like to designate as the primary contact
Select the person from the dropdown
If the contact is not in Copper yet, you can create them here as well.

Updating the company's primary contact from the People list in the Related section
To update the primary contact for a company from the Related section:
From the Copper web app, navigate to Companies
Select the company you would like to update
From the People list in the Related section, hover over the contact that you would like to designate as the primary contact
Click the Set Primary button that appears
If there are no contacts related to the company, you can relate them here or create a new contact to relate.
Updating the primary contact for an opportunity
The primary contact for an opportunity is not automatically set. You manually select the primary contact when creating the opportunity.
There are two places where you can update the primary contact for an opportunity:
From the Details section
From the People list in the Related section
When you update the primary contact, Copper will automatically:
Display the primary contact in the list view of opportunities
Move the new primary contact to the top of the People list in the Related section
Set the Primary Contact badge next to the person in the Related section
Update the Primary Contact field in the Details section
Updating the primary contact for an opportunity does not automatically update the primary contact for a company.
Updating the opportunity's primary contact from the Details section
To update the primary contact for an opportunity from the Details section:
From the Copper web app, navigate to Pipelines
Select the company you would like to update
From the Details section, click the Primary Contact field
In the field, use the search to find the person that you would like to designate as the primary contact
Select the person from the dropdown
If the contact is not in Copper yet, you can create them here as well.
Updating the opportunity's primary contact from the People list in the Related section
To update the primary contact for an opportunity from the Related section:
From the Copper web app, navigate to Companies
Select the company you would like to update
From the People list in the Related section, hover over the contact that you would like to designate as the primary contact
Click the Set Primary button that appears
If there are no contacts related to the opportunity, you can relate them here or create a new contact to relate.
Unrelating a primary contact
If a primary contact is unrelated from a company, the person who has been related to the Company for the longest time will automatically be set as the primary contact for the given company.
If no other contacts are related to the company, then no primary contact is set.
If a primary contact is unrelated from an opportunity, no new primary contact will be automatically set. You will need to select a new primary contact for the opportunity.
When only a single contact is associated with a company, they are automatically set as the primary contact. However, the primary contact for an opportunity must always be manually set.
