Relating records

In Copper, records are Leads, People, Companies, Opportunities, Projects and Tasks. While records are informative on their own, it's beneficial to relate records to each other to provide more context and increase your workflow efficiency.

In this article, we'll:

Understand why you'd relate records

There are plenty of reasons why it might be beneficial to relate records.

Example 1: You want to relate Jenna (Person) who is an employee at Acme Inc (Company).

Example 2: Relate Sally (Person) from XYZ Company to a pending deal (Opportunity).

Example 3: Relate multiple Tasks to a Project to keep the project organized and moving forward.

The following records can be related:

Lead: Task

Person: Company, Opportunity, Project Task

Company: Person, Opportunity, Project, Task

Opportunity: Person, Company, Project, Task

Project: Person, Company, Opportunity, Task

Task: Person, Company, Opportunity, Task

In some cases, emails and logged activities can sync across related records.

Relate records via a field

Check out the list below of fields you can use to relate records:

  • Leads: The 'Company' field won't link to existing companies in your Copper until you convert the lead to a person.

  • People: you can add an existing company or create a new company in the 'Company' field

  • Company: All relationships are indicated in the 'Related' section

  • Opportunity: The 'Primary Contact' field lets you choose an existing person or create a new one in Copper. You can also add an existing company or create a new company for the 'Company' field.

  • Projects: All relationships are indicated in the 'Related' section

  • Tasks: You can relate a task to a single record in the 'Related to' field.

To relate records to a master record's profile via a field, take the steps below:

  1. Sign into Copper, and click a record type from the left-hand menu.

  2. Click the name of the record you want to add a relationship to.

  3. Locate the detail fields section of a record's profile:

  4. Locate the field that let's you indicate a relationship.

  5. Begin to type the name of the record you want to relate. You'll see a drop-down menu appear with a match if one exists. If a match does not exist, you may see the option to create a new record.

  6. All record profile pages update automatically, so there is no need to save your changes.

Relate records via the 'Related' section

Check out the list below of options to relate records via the 'Related' section:

  • Leads: You can relate tasks in the 'Related' section.

  • People: You can relate opportunities, tasks, and projects in the 'Related' section.

  • Companies: You can relate opportunities, people, tasks and projects via the 'Related' section.

  • Opportunities: You can relate people, companies, tasks and projects via the 'Related' section.

  • Projects: You can relate people, companies, tasks and opportunities via the 'Related' section

  • Tasks: There is no 'Related' section on a task. You relate records via the 'Related To' field.

To relate records to a master record's profile via the 'Related' section, take these steps:

  1. Sign into Copper, and click a record type from the left-hand menu.

  2. Click the name of the record you want to add a relationship to.

  3. Locate the 'Related' section of the record's profile.

  4. Click the plus sign to the right of the record type you want to relate.

  5. Search for the existing record or choose the option to create a new one.

  6. All record profile pages update automatically, so there is no need to save your changes.
